The phrase "kingdom of God" is not used in the Old Testament; but, in the New Testament,
the concept of the Promised Land is embedded in the phrase "kingdom of God." What do you
observe about the kingdom?
30) And the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found
favor with God. 31) And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall
name Him Jesus. 32) He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the
Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David, 33) and He will reign over the
house of Jacob forever, and there will be no end of His kingdom."
(Luke 1:30-33, LSB)
14) Now after John had been delivered up into custody, Jesus came into
Galilee, preaching the gospel of God, 15) and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the
kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel."
(Mark 1:14-15, LSB)
33) And when they came to the place called The
Skull, there they crucified Him and the criminals, one on the right and the other on the left.
34) But Jesus was saying, "Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing."
And they cast lots, dividing up His garments among themselves. 35) And the people stood by,
looking on. And even the rulers were scoffing at Him, saying, "He saved others; let Him save
Himself if this is the Christ of God, His Chosen One." 36) And the soldiers also mocked Him,
coming up to Him, offering Him sour wine, 37) and saying, "If You are the King of the Jews,
save Yourself!" 38) Now there was also an inscription above Him, "THIS IS THE KING OF THE
JEWS."
39) And one of the criminals hanging there was
blaspheming Him, saying, "Are You not the Christ? Save Yourself and us!" 40) But the other
answered, and rebuking him said, "Do you not even fear God, since you are under the same
sentence of condemnation? 41) And we indeed are suffering justly, for we are receiving what
we deserve for what we have done; but this man has done nothing wrong." 42) And he was
saying, "Jesus, remember me when You come in Your kingdom!" 43) And He said to him,
"Truly I say to you, today you shall be with Me in Paradise."
(Luke 23:33-43,, LSB)
1) The first account, O Theophilus, I
composed, about all that Jesus began to do and teach, 2) until the day when He was taken up
to heaven, after He had by the Holy Spirit given orders to the apostles whom He had chosen,
3) to whom He also presented Himself alive after His suffering by many convincing proofs,
appearing to them over forty days and speaking about the things concerning the kingdom of God.
4) And gathering them together, He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for the
promise of the Father, "Which," He said, "you heard of from Me; 5) for John baptized with
water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now."
6) So when they had come together, they were asking Him,
saying, "Lord, is it at this time You are restoring the kingdom to Israel?" 7) But
He said to them, "It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has set by His
own authority; 8) but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and
you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the
end of the earth." (Acts 1:1-8, LSB)
16) So Paul stood up, and motioning with his hand said, "Men of Israel, and
you who fear God, listen: 17) The God of this people Israel chose our fathers and lifted up
the people during their stay in the land of Egypt, and with an uplifted arm He led them out
from it. 18) And for a period of about forty years He put up with them in the wilderness. 19)
And when He destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan, He distributed their land as an
inheritance—all of which took about 450 years. 20) After these things He gave them judges
until Samuel the prophet. 21) Then they asked for a king, and God gave them Saul the son of
Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years. 22) And after He had removed him, He
raised up David to be their king, about whom He also said, bearing witness, 'I have found
David the son of Jesse, a man after My heart, who will do all My will.' 23) From the seed
of this man, according to promise, God has brought to Israel a Savior, Jesus, 24) after
John had preached before His coming a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.
(Acts 13:16-24, LSB)
9) Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom
of God? Do not be deceived; neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers,
nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, 10) nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers,
nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God. 11) And such were some of you; but you were
washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ
and in the Spirit of our God. (1 Cor 6:9-11, LSB)
