A Series on Why Should I Study the Bible?

These Bible study lessons are designed to complement the myriad of study guides and plans available today. Through them, we hope to introduce sound study methodology, build a strong foundation of knowledge from which you can build and integrate a more coherent and comprehensive understanding of God's word and theology.

When one becomes a new Believer, few are taught how to read and study the Bible. There are many books and Internet resources on this subject; to learn more, look into the subject of biblical hermeneutics.

1. Observe very carefully what and why Moses is telling the nation of Israel about the first written record of God's word (Deut 4:5-8). What do you see?

2. Recognizing syntax and the natural divisions of a passage enables easier observation of the text. Note carefully what Joshua, only one of three who came out of Egypt and entered the Promised Land, emphasized about the importance of God's word (Josh 1:8). Likewise, observe carefully what the Psalmist says in Psalm 19:7-8. Discuss all the points you see.

3. Aside from the personal benefits of Bible study, one must not forget the role of the Believer in the larger picture (Ex 19:5-6; 1 Pet 2:9). What do you observe in the meaning of nouns and their implications? Did you ever observe Genesis 18:19?

4. Is the Old Testament irrelevant? Figures of speech can be awfully difficult to observe and understand, because one has to associate a concept to the figure / symbol. Try your best at what you observe in John 1:1, 17-18. Tentative observations do not need to be conclusive, but simply working concepts that are subject to testing and improvement over time.

5. As you learn more of God's word, you'll encounter passages that will help clarify earlier attempts of understanding any passages of question (John 5:39-47; 12:49-50). Observe Jesus' words carefully. With good observation, you might be able to gain a better grasp of the previous question's figure of speech. What do you see now?

6. 1 Pet 3:13-16 brings up another reason to study the Bible. Observe the apostle Peter's words carefully and share what you see.
