The Names Men call Jesus

A Series on the Names of God: Part 7

While Jesus was on earth, Old Testament Believers called Him with Messianic names and titles.

The Son of David

The record of the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah, the son of David, the son of Abraham: (Matt 1:1)

King of the Jews

Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him." (Matt 2:2)

The Consolation of Israel

And there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; and this man was righteous and devout, looking for the consolation of Israel; and the Holy Spirit was upon him. (Luke 2:25)

The Christ of God

And He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" And Peter answered and said, "The Christ of God." (Luke 9:20)

The Word

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (John 1:1)

The True Light

There was the true Light which, coming into the world, enlightens every man. (John 1:9)

The Only Begotten God

And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.. (John 1:14, 18)

Lamb of God

The next day he saw Jesus coming to him and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! (John 1:29)

The One who baptizes in the Holy Spirit

I did not recognize Him, but He who sent me to baptize in water said to me, "He upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining upon Him, this is the One who baptizes in the Holy Spirit." I myself have seen, and have testified that this is the Son of God. (John 1:33-34)

The Messiah

He found first his own brother Simon and said to him, "We have found the Messiah" (which translated means Christ). (John 1:41)

Other people used names for Jesus that reflected their view of Him as a human being.

Jesus the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee

And the crowds were saying, "This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth in Galilee." (Matt 21:11)

After Jesus' death and resurrection, the apostles called Jesus with names and titles that reflected their clear understanding of His divinity as Messiah and His sacrifice of atonement.

The Corner Stone

So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and are of God's household, having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the corner stone, in whom the whole building, being fitted together, is growing into a holy temple in the Lord, in whom you also are being built together into a dwelling of God in the Spirit. (Eph 2:19-22)

Here the apostle Paul uses a name that Jesus called Himself (Matt 21:42; Mark 12:10; Luke 20:17 [Ps 118:22]).

Holy and Righteous One, Prince of Life

But you disowned the Holy and Righteous One and asked for a murderer to be granted to you, but put to death the Prince of life, the one whom God raised from the dead, a fact to which we are witnesses. (Acts 3:14-15)

Holy Servant

For truly in this city there were gathered together against Your holy servant Jesus, whom You anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, (Acts 4:27)

Righteous One

Which one of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? They killed those who had previously announced the coming of the Righteous One, whose betrayers and murderers you have now become; you who received the law as ordained by angels, and yet did not keep it." (Acts 7:52-53)

Lord of All

The word which He sent to the sons of Israel, preaching peace through Jesus Christ (He is Lord of all) (Acts 10:36)

God Blessed Forever

For I could wish that I myself were accursed, separated from Christ for the sake of my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh, who are Israelites, to whom belongs the adoption as sons, and the glory and the covenants and the giving of the Law and the temple service and the promises, whose are the fathers, and from whom is the Christ according to the flesh, who is over all, God blessed forever. Amen. (Rom 9:3-5)

The Deliverer

and so all Israel will be saved; just as it is written,
"The Deliverer will come from Zion,
He will remove ungodliness from Jacob." (Rom 11:26)

The Lord of Glory

Yet we do speak wisdom among those who are mature; a wisdom, however, not of this age nor of the rulers of this age, who are passing away; but we speak God's wisdom in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God predestined before the ages to our glory; the wisdom which none of the rulers of this age has understood; for if they had understood it they would not have crucified the Lord of glory; (1 Cor 2:6-8)

Christ our Passover

Clean out the old leaven so that you may be a new lump, just as you are in fact unleavened. For Christ our Passover also has been sacrificed. (1 Cor 5:7)

Spiritual Rock

For I do not want you to be unaware, brethren, that our fathers were all under the cloud and all passed through the sea; and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea; and all ate the same spiritual food; and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they were drinking from a spiritual rock which followed them; and the rock was Christ. (1 Cor 10:1-4)

Adam

So also it is written, "The first man, Adam, became a living soul." The last Adam became a life-giving spirit. (1 Cor 15:45)

The Image of God

And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, in whose case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving so that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. (2 Cor 4:3-4)

King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God

Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen. (1 Tim 1:17)

One Mediator

For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself as a ransom for all, the testimony given at the proper time. (1 Tim 2:5)

Heir of All Things

God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world. (Heb 1:1-2)

Author of Salvation

For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things, and through whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to perfect the author of their salvation through sufferings. (Heb 2:10)

The Apostle and High Priest of our confession

Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the Apostle and High Priest of our confession; (Heb 3:1)

Great High Priest

Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. (Heb 4:14)

The Author and Perfecter of faith

fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. (Heb 12:2)

The Shepherd and Guardian of your souls

For you were continually straying like sheep, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Guardian of your souls. (1 Peter 2:25)

Chief Shepherd

Therefore, I exhort the elders among you, as your fellow elder and witness of the sufferings of Christ, and a partaker also of the glory that is to be revealed, shepherd the flock of God among you, exercising oversight not under compulsion, but voluntarily, according to the will of God; and not for sordid gain, but with eagerness; nor yet as lording it over those allotted to your charge, but proving to be examples to the flock. And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory. (1 Pet 5:1-4)

Advocate

My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; (1 John 2:1)

The Faithful Witness, The Firstborn of the Dead, and the Ruler of the Kings of the Earth

and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To Him who loves us and released us from our sins by His blood— (Rev 1:5)

The Lion that is from the tribe of Judah, the Root of David

Then I began to weep greatly because no one was found worthy to open the book or to look into it; and one of the elders said to me, "Stop weeping; behold, the Lion that is from the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has overcome so as to open the book and its seven seals." (Rev 5:4-5)

Lamb who has been slain

All who dwell on the earth will worship him, everyone whose name has not been written from the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who has been slain. (Rev 13:8)

The Word of God

He is clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God. (Rev 19:13)

I have made it a practice for several years to read the Bible through in the course of every year. I usually devote to this reading the first hour after I rise in the morning.

John Quincy Adams (1810)
