As we study about faith in Jesus Christ as the means for salvation from the judicial penalty for
our sins, it's easy to think that this process is all about ourselves. But if we consider carefully
God's perspective, we can glimpse the larger picture and gain a better understanding about God.
1. In the process of fulfilling His promises to Abraham, God made the conditional Mosaic Covenant
to teach the Hebrews how to be holy so that they could be descendants of Abraham. This important step
was a prerequisite for God to be God of a descendant of Abraham.
2. In failing their covenant commitments, the nation of Israel was expelled from the Promised Land,
which was reserved only for the descendants of Abraham. To fulfill His promise to Abraham and restore
the holiness of His name, God made the unconditional New Covenant.
3. In restoration of His holy name, God provided His Son to pay for all the intentional and
unintentional sins of all mankind. This atonement was the only legal restitution for the sins of
the world and achieve judicial justice that the holy God required and make one holy to be in His
presence.
4. Faith is a) believing that God is historical, real and alive, and b) placing a trust in His
words that engender an obedience. While the work of atonement is done by Jesus Christ, faith in His
work is equivalent to faith in His Father; genuine faith produces an obedience to the word of God.
5. Based on a relationship with the Holy Spirit, as designed with the New Covenant, one learns more
about loving God with one's heart, mind, and soul, and loving your neighbor as yourself. The indwelling
of the Spirit is not how much the Spirit has you; instead, it is how much you let the Spirit have you.
Through this process, God uses you to fulfill His promise to Abraham of descendants in preparation for
entrance into the Promised Land.
And he brought him outside and said, "Look toward heaven, and number the
stars, if you are able to number them." Then he said to him, "So shall your offspring be." And he
believed the Lord, and he counted it to him as righteousness. (Gen 15:5-6, LSB)
